Indonesia Pushes Platforms to Strengthen Online Gambling Content Controls

Indonesia is increasing pressure on digital platforms and service providers to improve the detection, prevention and removal of online gambling content.
Communications and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid reported that the ministry had handled 4.1 million pieces of gambling content. This included 3.6 million websites and IP addresses.
The government continues to block access to identified gambling content but is also calling on digital services to strengthen their own systems. The focus includes interactive features such as comment sections, where gambling promotions can reach users.
The latest statement does not introduce a new law, compliance deadline or penalty. It also does not establish specific technical requirements for how platforms should monitor and remove gambling content.
Cross-border enforcement remains another challenge. According to the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, many IP addresses connected to gambling operations are located outside Indonesia.
Authorities can block access within the country, but overseas infrastructure limits their ability to act directly against some services.
The government is therefore continuing its blocking campaign while asking platforms to take a larger role in detecting and preventing gambling promotions across their services.
